Why You Need to Stop Skipping Breakfast!

This one is for all my ladies skipping breakfast…. Please, stop. 

I know that intermittent fasting has become highly popularized and cited as a cure for cravings, stubborn weight and brain fog but this information came from studies done on men and the science does not translate to our female physiology. At all. 

“Women do better in a fed state.” Dr. Stacy Sims is a physiologist who has dedicated her career to studying how the female body responds to exercise and nutrition because, well, no one had thought to do that before! The vast majority of the research we have on health, fitness and nutrition comes from studies done exclusively on men and what we are learning is that, as Dr. Sims says, “Women are NOT small men!”

We have different nutritional needs and one of them is to EAT! Our stress hormones, our cognition,  and our blood sugar are better regulated when we eat healthy and balanced meals at regular intervals. 

Breakfast has always been a challenge for me because mornings are busy and so smoothies have been my go-to for years. They allow me to get a serving of fruit, veggie, healthy fat and protein in a grab & go format I can blend and drink in the car. Some of the ways I upgrade my smoothie are to add a full scoop of protein powder, a tablespoon of ground flax, a scoop of Fibre Feel or Glutamine powder to support my gut, a powdered probiotic, Green Up to support my immune system and energy, or a scoop of magnesium powder if I am feeling stiff and sore. 

The options are endless. The important thing is that you find a flavour combo you like and consistently plan for the most important meal of the day.
